“Il Porcellino” or the Boar of the Ufizzi by Pietro Tacca

Italian sculpture called “Il Porcellino” or the boar of the Ufizzi, dated at the end of the 19th century, carved in green serpentine marble.

The original bronze sculpture was cast by the Baroque master Pietro Tacca (1577-1640) from a Hellenistic marble original that is now displayed in the Ufizzi Museum in Florence, Italy. The Tacca bronze can now be seen in the Museo Bardini, Palazzo Mozzi. Traditionally, the boar was fed coins for good luck and rubbing the snout ensured a return to Florence.
The boar sculpture is based on the “Calydonian boar” from Greek mythology.

This small-scale specimen has excellent attention to detail with well-carved features, faithfully copying the original.

Italy, CIRCA 1800.
